How does your media product represent particular social groups?
My media product is representative of an alternative counter culture group, with an underlying of punk culture. It represents this niche culture positively, as all models in my magazine look clean and presentable; also my product is well put together. The audience believes the makers of this magazine are from their social group also, which contributes to them wanting to buy it. This is because Adam, a journalist for it is shown on my contents page.

The main
culture of my magazine would be Indie; this social group has grown dramatically
over the past 10 years, making my target audience large. The qualities of
‘Indie’ include a desire to be individual, taste in brand new and
non-mainstream music. They are also known for wanting a certain appearance,
because my magazine takes a punk twist on indie I have dressed everyone in an
indie way with a hint of punk (jacket used on my cover).
My product does
not represent any mainstream social groups, it could be argued that indie is
becoming one, but the convention of it is to be individual so I don’t believe
it is mainstream.
The expression
on Kate’s face on the cover is counter culture yet connotes fun and
carelessness. This was an elaborate choice to make my product appear edgy yet
still inviting. It represents a rock lifestyle because the photo does not look
over prepared – model in casual clothes and the lighting is basic, also use of
no backdrop gives the illusion it could be a dressing room.
Sign repetition
occurs where Kate is pulling the same face on my contents page, this is to
reinforce the genre conventions of alternative/punk.
The language
used in my magazine also reflects this social group; the only swearing occurs
during the interview form Kate as she is in a band so I felt she had to
represent that stereotype through casual speech. My pull quote in the article,
“In 5 years time I reckon I’ll be dead.” could be seen to represent the social
group negatively, however when the consumer reads the article they will
discover it was intended in a joke context so it’s just a way to position the
consumer to read it.
The quote on my
contents page is also controversial, but intended as a tool to tempt my
audience to read the full article. I don’t think this represents the social
group negatively either, although this time it was not a joke it was honesty,
it only reflects Kate personally not the whole scene.
Overall I feel
my product represents an alternative/indie/punk niche social group in a
positive way as my product is there for the purpose of entertainment and
information, which is a positive influence on the scene.
