Information On Magazine Publishers

                                           Information On Magazine Publishers

IPC
IPC is one of the UK’s leading publishers and has titles including NME, Now, Marie Claire, Nuts and Uncut and over 60 others. Their products reach 2 thirds of the UK’s women and 42% of men. Their websites collected reach over 14 million users each month. IPC offers something for everyone, which is why they are so well established. Their 3 core audiences are men, mass market women and upmarket women. Their magazines for men include NME, Nuts and for women Chat, TV Times and Now.

The positives of going with such a publisher include funding help, advertisement help and getting you magazine stocked in a range of places country wide. The negatives include some creative control may be lost and also content, also your magazine could get too big meaning too much pressure on workers.

MAMA & company
MAMA & company is a small UK publisher, the only magazine it currently publishes and funds is The Fly, all their other associations are with festivals and venues. This benefits The Fly because they can get exclusives from any of MAMA & company’s associated places.

The positives of a small publisher include; more control creatively, some access to musicians whilst still being financially supported and distributed. Negatives are it is harder to compete with the magazines published by bigger companies, as their names are better known.

INDEPENDENT
Some magazines choose to go independent, most famously the punk era had many independent fanzines. This is a common approach amongst students and people on low income that want to make a, usually local, magazine.

The positives here are total content and creative control; you can broadcast exactly what you want to exactly whom you want. The negatives are you can’t branch out because of financial and distribution issues and the magazine will never be as known as something with a competent publisher.

My Magazine:
For my magazine I think a company like MAMA & company would publish it, it couldn.t be IPC as my magazine is too close to NME and Bauer have Q. I also feel a smaller publisher is better for my target audience and demographic because it would be distrusted through record stores and gig venues. My magazine does not compete with The Fly as The Fly is free and mine is not and mine covers different music styles. Therefore a company like MAMA & company publishing my magazine would bring in profit and widen it’s genres.
