Overview Of Magazine Industry

Overview Of Magazine Industry

The UK magazine industry is very strong, there are currently over 8000 titles getting published. There are several categories of magazines; my focus is ‘Consumer’ which is magazines sold in newsagents and online, these are either general or specialist interest. They make up the most of post office sales in magazines. General interests are more to entertain and inform, whereas specialist are directed toward specific interests like gardening, music and so on. The other categories of magazine include newspaper supplements academic journals, customer magazines and others.

Currently in the UK there are over 3,200 different consumer titles, this has tripled since 30 years ago. 1.4 billion magazines are sold each year, 85% of the populations reads a magazine. Advertisers spent £745 million in magazines in 2008, consumers spend £2 billion on magazines annually, on average – 500 new magazines have been launched every year on the past decade and only 3 in 10 titles survive more than 4 years.

These facts, from magforum.com show just how magazines are growing within the UK, with so many new ones being launched it makes it harder to breakthrough and become a mainstream publication this is why the industry is so competitive and there are so many special interests magazines coming out, everyone is looking for a loophole into this industry as the profits grow as soon as the magazine begins to circulate.
